Over 4,000 Abandoned Mine Pits in Plateau, Alake Warns

Minister Alake reported that there are over 4,000 abandoned mine pits in Plateau, many created by former mining companies, which present significant environmental and safety challenges. This statement followed a tragic incident in which seven people died in a collapsed mine pit at Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

Alake described the incident as tragic and avoidable, warning artisanal miners against entering abandoned pits without proper licenses. He encouraged miners to form cooperatives and obtain necessary approvals for legal operations.

The minister noted that the abandoned pits are a legacy of the activities of Amalgamated Tin Mines Limited and its successor companies. The Federal Government has rehabilitated 59 abandoned mine pits and is using technology, including Geographic Information System satellite mapping and Artificial Intelligence, to assess others.

Plateau will be the pilot beneficiary of this initiative, aimed at converting abandoned sites into productive ventures like energy, tourism, and fisheries projects through public-private partnerships.
