FRSC Warns Against Overloading Vehicles in Nigeria

During the National Breakfast Policy Dialogue and Launch of the National Movement for Safe Loading and Safe Roads in Abuja, Mohammed from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) stated that overloading vehicles leads to accidents and road damage. He explained that the risks associated with overloading include not only the weight but also the nature of the load, its positioning, and scaling, which can compromise vehicle stability and braking.

Mohammed stressed that overloading is a significant issue in Nigeria's haulage and logistics sector, where the pressure to maximize journeys often leads to unsafe practices. He noted that the consequences of overloading affect various stakeholders: the government incurs costs from road damage, operators face vehicle repair costs, and families suffer irreparable losses from fatal crashes.

He called for shared responsibility among cargo owners, shippers, transporters, and regulators to ensure safe loading practices and compliance with vehicle weight limits. The FRSC plans to enhance enforcement and public education to improve road safety.
