Nigeria's Tax Revenue Concerns Highlighted by Oyedele

On a recent occasion in Abuja, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance, lamented Nigeria's inability to generate adequate revenue from taxation, despite ongoing reforms.

He noted that a significant number of eligible taxpayers are not fulfilling their civic obligations. Oyedele stressed that the solution does not necessarily lie in raising tax rates but in ensuring that individuals and businesses pay their fair share of taxes within a transparent system.

He spoke during the Leadership Charter Institute's National Tax Award Day, led by Mr. Innoc Ohagwa, where he commended the institute's support for the federal government's tax reform agenda.

Oyedele pointed out that many Nigerians view taxation merely as a tool for government revenue rather than as a critical instrument for national development. The event coincided with the first anniversary of Nigeria's landmark tax reform legislation, marking a new era in tax administration focused on simplicity, fairness, and efficiency.
