Nigeria's Finance Minister Clarifies Tax Reform Agenda

On Thursday, Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of Finance, addressed concerns regarding Nigeria's tax reform agenda, stating that the government will not increase tax rates. Instead, the focus will be on expanding the tax net to ensure eligible taxpayers fulfill their obligations.

Oyedele made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria at their office in Abuja. He commended the institute for introducing a national tax awareness day to support the government's ongoing tax reform efforts.

Oyedele urged the institute to enhance public enlightenment, noting that many Nigerians perceive taxation as merely a means for the government to generate revenue. Innoc Ohagwa, the President and Chairman of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, highlighted that there are widespread misconceptions about the government's tax reform, with many believing it involves introducing new taxes across various sectors of the economy.
