Oyetola Launches Committee to Boost Nigeria's Fish Production

On Thursday, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, inaugurated the Technical Committee on Accelerating Fish Production in Nigeria in Abuja. The committee's objective is to create a practical roadmap to boost sustainable fish production and strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture value chain, moving beyond mere policy recommendations.

Oyetola emphasized the importance of fish as a primary source of animal protein for millions of Nigerians and highlighted the sector's role in supporting various livelihoods. He identified significant challenges such as high production costs, inadequate access to quality fish seed, weak biosecurity systems, and limited access to finance.

The minister noted that the transfer of fisheries functions to his ministry has strengthened the institutional framework for addressing these issues. The committee will review recommendations from a strategic roundtable held on October 29, 2025, and determine which proposals to implement or discard, ensuring alignment with existing national policies and programs.
