Oyetola Launches NIMASA-UNILAG Maritime Institute Building

On Thursday, Adegboyega Oyetola inaugurated the NIMASA-UNILAG Institute of Maritime Studies building at the University of Lagos, reaffirming the federal government's commitment to advancing Nigeria's maritime blue economy. The modern facility, equipped with lecture rooms and laboratories, aims to support teaching, research, and innovation in the maritime sector.

Oyetola described the project as a milestone reflecting the government's resolve to strengthen institutional capacity in the blue economy, which is crucial for national prosperity. He highlighted that 90% of Nigeria's trade is conducted via maritime channels, underscoring the sector's role in economic diversification and job creation.

The Minister disclosed that 2,459 Nigerian seafarers are being trained through the Nigerian Seafarer Development Programme (NSDP), with 1,088 beneficiaries obtaining certification. Oyetola also outlined government initiatives, including the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF), expected to create 30,000 jobs.

The event was attended by key stakeholders in the maritime sector, including NIMASA's Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and UNILAG's Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola.
