Oyetola Launches NIMASA-UNILAG Maritime Institute in Lagos

On Thursday, Adegboyega Oyetola, the Governor of Osun State, commissioned the NIMASA-UNILAG Maritime Institute Building in Lagos, reaffirming the federal government's commitment to strengthening Nigeria's Blue Economy. The new multipurpose building, equipped with modern lecture halls and specialized research facilities, aims to support innovative training in the maritime sector.

Oyetola described the project as a significant milestone, highlighting the government's resolve to build institutional capacity to position the maritime blue economy as a key driver of national development. He noted that 90% of Nigeria's trade is conducted via maritime channels, underscoring the sector's importance for economic diversification and job creation.

Oyetola revealed that 2,459 Nigerians have been trained through the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP), with 1,088 beneficiaries already certified. He also disclosed plans to disburse funds to strengthen indigenous ship capacity, which is expected to create 30,000 jobs alongside ongoing port modernization projects that aim to generate an additional 20,000 jobs.
