Oyetola Urges Judiciary to Prepare for Digital Shipping Disputes

Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, addressed the judiciary on the impending challenges posed by digital shipping and autonomous vessels during his keynote speech at the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges in Abuja. He emphasized the need for the judiciary to prepare for a new generation of maritime disputes linked to advancements in maritime technology, including issues of liability, navigational responsibility, and insurance.

Oyetola noted that the digitalisation of shipping, through innovations like electronic bills of lading and blockchain-enabled documentation, is transforming global commerce and creating complex legal questions. He highlighted the importance of a well-informed judiciary in enhancing Nigeria's status as a premier maritime hub, advocating for the expansion of specialized maritime divisions within the Federal High Court and the alignment of domestic laws with international maritime conventions.

Oyetola stressed that a predictable judiciary could lower transaction costs and attract international investors to Nigeria's maritime sector.
