FG Commits to Enhancing Maritime Justice System

On Wednesday, in Abuja, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, announced the Federal Government's commitment to implement actionable recommendations from the 18th International Maritime Seminar for Judges. This seminar, organized by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute and the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, emphasized the importance of an efficient maritime justice system for attracting investment and facilitating trade.

Akume highlighted that delays in maritime dispute resolutions negatively affect trade and investor confidence, ultimately impacting the cost of goods for Nigerians. He pledged support for the seminar's resolutions, particularly those needing legislative intervention and executive action.

Recommendations requiring legislative amendments will be directed to the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Justice. Akume underscored the necessity of collaboration among key maritime institutions to improve sector efficiency and reiterated that a reliable maritime justice system is foundational to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on the Blue Economy.
