Oyo Communities Demand Herdsmen Leave Over Security Issues

On August 10, 2026, leaders and residents from eight communities in Ogbomoso South Local Government Area, Oyo State, issued a 48-hour ultimatum for a group of unfamiliar Fulani herdsmen to vacate the area. This decision arose from increasing security concerns and disturbances attributed to the herders and their cattle.

The communities involved are Ibapon Are Oluwamodupe, Ayedire, Mercy Land, Estate, Irewolede, Ona Igbala, Ifesowapo, and Grace Land. Community leaders cited recent kidnapping incidents, including a notable case in Oloka village and the May abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, as reasons for their actions.

Baale Ibapon, Ashifat Akanji, stated that the ultimatum was not against all Fulani residents but specifically targeted those unfamiliar to them. Alagbe Oyebamiji, chairman of the communities, accused the herders of causing damage to farms and sanitation issues, prompting the need for precautionary measures.
