Oyo Retirees Threaten Protests Over Pension Issues

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Oyo State Council, announced on Monday that they would initiate indefinite protests against the managements of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, starting August 18, 2026, due to non-compliance with Governor Seyi Makinde’s pension increase directive. Segun Abatan, the state secretary of the union, stated that the governor had approved a minimum monthly pension of N25,000 for the least paid pensioners effective January 2025, along with directives for incorporating outstanding pension increases.

Abatan criticized the chief executive officers of state-owned tertiary institutions for defying the governor's authority, noting that other government agencies complied immediately despite the lack of an official circular. He mentioned that while some institutions eventually complied, others, including LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, had not responded adequately to the union's requests.
