Oyo Pensioners Demand Minimum Wage Implementation at Universities

The Oyo state council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has demanded that the management of Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH) and Emmanuel Alayande University of Education implement minimum wage increases for their pensioners. At a press conference held on Monday at the Pensioners FM complex in Ibadan, state secretary Comrade Olusegun Abatan warned that if the institutions do not comply by Tuesday, August 18, they will shut down operations.

The union accused the institutions of a "gross act of insubordination" and noted that the non-implementation of the minimum wage violates sections 210(3) and 173(3) of the Nigerian Constitution. They claimed that despite Governor Seyi Makinde's directive in January 2026 to increase pensions for retirees, LAUTECH and Emmanuel Alayande University have failed to act.

The union has waited 19 months for the pension upgrade and urged the institutions to follow the example of Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, which has already implemented the increase.
