Oyo State Allocates N142bn for Workers' Salaries Annually

Oyo State Commissioner Dotun Oyelade revealed that the state government allocates N142 billion annually for workers' salaries, ranking it among the three highest in salary expenditures among states in Nigeria. This announcement follows Governor Seyi Makinde's earlier declaration regarding a N10,000 transport support package aimed at various worker categories, which will increase the state's wage bill by nearly N2 billion monthly.

The governor introduced this package in response to the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has driven global fuel prices higher. Additionally, in January of the previous year, the Oyo State government raised the minimum wage to N130,000 for its workforce of 80,000 to help mitigate the hardships caused by the federal government's removal of fuel subsidies.

Governor Makinde has consistently emphasized his commitment to worker welfare since assuming office in May 2019. Recently, President Bola Tinubu pledged to donate salaries to families of fallen or wounded military personnel.
