Panama Introduces Permanent Residence Pathway for Long-Term International Students

Panama has implemented a new immigration policy that offers a permanent residence pathway for long-term international students. Under the new framework, foreign nationals who have demonstrated six consecutive years of academic study in Panama can apply for permanent residency.

This marks a significant shift from Panama's previous policy, which only offered temporary study permits without a pathway to permanent residency. The newly published executive decree by the Panamanian government establishes a subcategory for long-term students, allowing them to transition from temporary to permanent residency status.

The policy aims to dismantle barriers for eligible students by exempting them from mandatory financial requirements. While the process does not grant immediate permanent residency, qualified applicants will initially receive a two-year provisional residence permit.

The policy also includes provisions for minors under 18 to apply jointly with their parents or legal guardians. This move reflects Panama's strategic positioning as a bridge between North and South America and its efforts to attract and retain skilled international talent.
