Meningitis Outbreak Claims 33 Lives in Sokoto Communities

An outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis in Sokoto State has led to the deaths of 33 children, with health authorities confirming 256 suspected cases across eight local government areas. Dr.

Faruk Abubakar disclosed these figures during an advocacy meeting. The outbreak, which resurfaced about a month ago, has particularly affected children and teenagers, with Sabon Birni Local Government Area reporting the highest number of cases at 63.

Other areas with significant cases include Wamakko (60), Shagari (51), and Tambuw (33). The deaths occurred within communities where victims were taken to healthcare facilities for treatment, but delays in seeking medical help and misconceptions about the disease contributed to the fatalities.

The Sokoto State government is collaborating with Médecins Sans Frontières to establish isolation centers for improved treatment and infection control. Despite the intervention, reports indicate that fresh cases continue to emerge daily, and the isolation center has recorded two recent deaths among patients.
