Nigeria Faces Meningitis Outbreak in Northern States

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued a warning regarding a worsening meningitis outbreak in northern Nigeria, particularly affecting children aged 15 and under. Dr.

Jide Idri, the director-general of NCDC, highlighted that the current vaccine does not fully protect against the dominant Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C strain, which is spreading rapidly. Between October 2022 and April 2023, Nigeria recorded 1,686 suspected cases and 124 deaths, resulting in a 7% case fatality rate.

The outbreak is concentrated in the African meningitis belt, with 11 states categorized as high risk, including Sokoto, Kebbi, and Jigawa. The dry season, characterized by overcrowding and poor ventilation, has increased transmission risks.

The NCDC is intensifying surveillance and laboratory testing to combat the outbreak, which is primarily driven by serogroup C, alongside strains W, X, and Y. Meningitis can progress rapidly and become fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly.
