Maldini Resigns as Italy Technical Director Amid Disputes

Paolo Maldini has resigned from his position as Italy's technical director only two weeks after his appointment. This resignation occurred alongside advisor Leonardo, who also stepped down due to disagreements with the Football Federation of Italy (FIGC) regarding the future head coach of the national team.

Maldini and Leonardo attempted to advocate for Andrea Pirlo as the head coach, but FIGC chairman Giovanni Malag was not supportive of Pirlo's candidacy. They suggested alternatives, including Thiago Motta, but the FIGC was not inclined to appoint any of them.

Malag recommended considering veteran coaches like Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini, but Maldini and Leonardo expressed doubts about Mancini's commitment after he left for a position in the Saudi Arabian League. They also viewed Conte as too ambitious given the timeline for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The refusal to appoint Pirlo, who is a brand ambassador for a Russian betting firm, was seen as undermining their authority, prompting their immediate resignations. The FIGC is expected to meet soon to decide on a new manager.
