PDP Torn Over Jonathan's 2027 Bid Amid Faction Leadership Row

The Peoples Democratic Party is experiencing escalating internal divisions regarding whether former President Goodluck Jonathan should participate in the 2027 presidential contest, with rival factions advancing incompatible assertions about his role. Tanimu Turaki leads a breakaway group known as the Interim National Working Committee, which attempted to register Jonathan as the party's presidential nominee with the Independent National Electoral Commission; however, this effort failed owing to procedural deficiencies.

At the same time, the Forum of PDP State Chairmen has demanded that Jonathan openly reject any connection to Turaki's faction and has urged him to unambiguously separate himself from what they describe as improper and potentially criminal party conduct. These state chairmen, who support the competing National Working Committee chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed, have intensified efforts to combat the Turaki faction by demanding that security agencies probe alleged document forgery, identity misrepresentation, and record tampering.

They contend that the authentic party structure exists exclusively under Mohammed's leadership and have requested formal investigation of such allegations. By issuing this statement, the chairmen seek to ensure Jonathan cannot be exploited as a tool in the power struggle engulfing the opposition party.

Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Fred Agbedi delivered remarks suggesting that Jonathan's appearance on the ballot would strengthen PDP's electoral performance in 2027, indicating continuing political interest in his potential candidacy despite the party's deteriorating cohesion. Agbedi recognised the persistence of factional quarrels but presented Jonathan as someone enjoying substantial political credibility nationwide.

This perspective diverges from the state chairmen's push to shield Jonathan from factional involvement. Another development complicating Jonathan's situation involves a private audience with President Bola Tinubu conducted at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Presidency and Jonathan offered no clarification regarding their discussion, making it unclear whether the encounter addressed 2027 electoral matters or other governance issues. Given that this meeting coincided with intensified factional strife within the PDP, observers have offered varied interpretations about possible strategic coordination and Jonathan's actual plans for prospective electoral participation.
