Peru Lawmakers Remove President Boluarte Over Corruption and Crime Surge

Peru lawmakers voted to oust President Boluarte due to corruption allegations and a surge in violent crime, marking the end of his turbulent tenure. Boluarte, who took office less than two years ago, was impeached for refusing to appear before Congress on charges of moral permanence.

The dramatic vote took place in Lima, where 118 members of Congress voted for impeachment, leading to the announcement that José Jeri would assume interim leadership until fresh elections in April 2026. Boluarte's presidency was marred by deadly protests, corruption probes, and escalating gang violence, despite surviving multiple impeachment attempts.

The removal of Boluarte has further deepened political unrest in Peru.
