Pesticide Exposure Increases Cancer Risk by 150%

A recent study has found that exposure to pesticides can increase cancer risk by 150%, even when individual chemicals are considered safe. Conducted by researchers from the Institut Pasteur and the Université de Toulouse, the study analyzed data from the National Cancer Registry and health records of 150,000 cancer patients from 2007 to 2020.

It identified a strong correlation between environmental exposure to agricultural pesticides and higher cancer rates, particularly in regions with high pesticide concentrations. The research focused on Peru, where the unique agricultural practices and diverse ecosystems contribute to elevated pesticide exposure, especially among indigenous rural farming communities.

The study utilized a six-year analysis of pesticide dispersion from 2014 to 2019 to create high-resolution maps of exposure risk. It emphasizes the need for updated risk assessments that consider the combined effects of pesticide exposure in real-world conditions, as current safety evaluations may overlook significant health risks posed by these chemicals.
