Peter Obi Defends Catholic Bishops Against Government Attacks

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, condemned the Tinubu government for what he termed a "war against truth," specifically criticizing the growing attacks on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN). In a statement on his official social media, Obi defended the CBCN, asserting that it has consistently acted as the nation's conscience rather than as an opposition group.

He highlighted that the Church has historically commended governments when warranted and raised concerns during national crises. Obi pointed out that other religious organizations, including the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, have similarly voiced concerns over issues like insecurity and poverty.

He stressed the need for leaders to embrace honest criticism and condemned the attacks on Cardinal John Onaiyekan for expressing concerns about national issues. Obi argued that the bishops' statements reflect the daily struggles of Nigerians, including worsening insecurity and deepening poverty.
