Peter Obi Dismisses Rift with Atiku Ahead of 2027 Elections

Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, addressed speculations regarding a rift with Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, as the 2027 presidential elections approach. Speaking on the sidelines of a dialogue in Cape Town, Obi asserted that Atiku remains one of his closest political figures and that he respects him as a leader and elder brother.

Obi clarified that he is not running against anyone, but believes in differing perspectives. He also explained his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he officially joined on January 1, 2026, citing unresolved internal crises and ongoing legal battles within the party as reasons for his departure.

Obi's decision to leave was not based on personal disagreements with Atiku, who is the chairman of the ADC, but rather on the need to focus on addressing national issues. Following Obi's departure, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress.
