Peter Obi Condemns Violence Against Rotimi Amaechi

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, condemned the recent attack on Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transport, in his home state of River State. In a statement, Obi warned that Nigeria must not slide into a "democracy driven by thuggery," highlighting the dangers of violence and intimidation that silence opposition voices and weaken democratic participation.

He noted the assault on Amaechi's convoy and the burning of an office belonging to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a political event, which he described as a disturbing development reflecting the deteriorating state of Nigeria's democratic system. Obi further cautioned that failure to arrest and prosecute those responsible for such actions poses a serious threat to democracy, potentially encouraging lawlessness.

He asserted that citizens may feel compelled to take matters into their own hands if their democratic rights are not protected, emphasizing that Nigeria deserves a political environment characterized by organized competition and accountability.
