Peter Obi Critiques Politicians Over 2027 Election Focus

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticized Nigerian political leaders for their preoccupation with the 2027 elections amid escalating insecurity across the country. In a statement, Obi pointed out that in the first two months of 2026, over 1,000 Nigerians were reportedly killed, and several others abducted, highlighting the dire situation in states like Zamfara, Kwara, and Plateau.

He expressed concern that politicians are spending energy on electoral strategies instead of addressing the urgent security challenges facing the nation. Obi noted that the violence has led to mass displacement and widespread fear, with major attacks occurring in 25 states.

He stressed that the focus should be on protecting lives rather than political maneuvering, asserting that history will judge leaders based on their actions during crises, not their electoral strategies. His comments come against a backdrop of persistent security challenges in Nigeria's northwest and north-central regions.
