Peter Okoye Apologizes for Controversial Language Comment

Peter Okoye, a Nigerian music star professionally known as Mr P, publicly apologized for his comment “Who Naija language help?” made while responding to a follower on X. His statement questioned the value and importance of Nigerian languages, leading to significant backlash online.

Initially, Okoye told critics to “do their worst” and reiterated his statement, but he later bowed to public pressure and issued an apology. On Wednesday evening, he stated, “If my response to ‘Who Naija language help?’ upset some people, I apologise and take full responsibility for my words.” He clarified that his comment was not an expression of hatred towards Nigerian languages or culture, specifically denying any negative sentiment towards the Igbo language or culture.

Okoye emphasized that his reference to “Naija language” was meant to encompass the various languages in Nigeria, but some individuals misinterpreted it as a specific attack on the Igbo language.
