Nigerian Petrol Consumption Drops 28% as Prices Soar, Citizens Seek Alternatives

Petrol consumption in Nigeria has dropped significantly over the past two years as pump prices continue to rise, burdening citizens. The Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority reported a 28% decrease in average daily petrol consumption from June 2023 to June 2025.

Since the end of the subsidy program in May 2023, petrol prices have surged, reaching an average of N195 per liter. Major filling stations, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), now sell petrol at N865 per liter in Lagos.

The high prices have led some Nigerians to consider Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a viable alternative, while fuel station owners are experiencing reduced sales due to the price hikes.
