Presidency Accuses Atiku of Political Opportunism on Subsidy

The Presidency, through Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare, accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of political opportunism following his recent call for the reintroduction of petrol subsidy. Dare stated that Atiku's current position represents a significant departure from his earlier economic agenda, where he had criticized the subsidy as opaque, corrupt, and financially unsustainable.

He alleged that Atiku's advocacy for subsidy now is a "radical reversal" driven by political motivations as the next electoral cycle approaches. Dare emphasized that the removal of the subsidy, despite its short-term challenges, has allowed for better resource allocation and investment in infrastructure.

He warned that reinstating the subsidy would hinder local refining and discourage private investment. Dare urged Nigerians to reject Atiku's proposal, labeling it a "desperate gambit" that prioritizes electoral calculations over long-term economic stability.
