Philadelphia Hotel Workers Threaten Strike Ahead of World Cup

Hotel employees in Philadelphia, represented by Local 274, have issued a strike threat as contract negotiations continue without a new agreement since June 12. Union president Rosslyn Wuchinich warned that workers at several hotels, including Sheraton Downtown Philadelphia and Hilton Garden Inn Center City, are prepared to walk off the job.

The strike is timed with the FIFA World Cup next month, which is expected to attract around half a million visitors and generate approximately $770 million in revenue for the city. Workers are advocating for improved wages, with current salaries ranging from $19 to $30 per hour, citing the rising cost of living as a primary reason for their demands.

The union is also seeking enhancements in health care plans and workplace protections. The situation follows earlier strike actions by workers at the Center City hotel, highlighting ongoing labor tensions in the hospitality sector.
