Governor Okpebholo Joins Protest Over Electricity Issues

On a recent date, Governor Okpebholo participated in a protest in Benin City, Edo State, addressing issues of poor electricity supply and increased billing by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). The protest, which took place along the Ring Road, highlighted the frustrations of residents regarding persistent blackouts and high electricity bills.

Governor Okpebholo expressed solidarity with the demonstrators and acknowledged the widespread electricity challenges affecting the entire state. He disclosed that the state government would take concrete steps to address the concerns raised and announced a stakeholder meeting scheduled for Tuesday, urging the protestors to nominate five representatives to participate.

The protest remained peaceful, with security personnel ensuring order. Demonstrators carried banners with messages such as "No BEDC, Oppress No Light, No Bill" and criticized the transparency of BEDC's prepaid meter distribution scheme, which reportedly costs between 150,000 to 400,000 Naira.

As of the time of the governor's address, BEDC had not issued an official response to the allegations.
