Plateau Assembly Advances Tenancy Bill for Second Reading

On Friday, during a plenary session, the Plateau House of Assembly passed the Tenancy Bill for a second reading, which aims to regulate tenancy agreements and foster better relations between landlords and tenants in Plateau State. The bill, referred to as the Tenancy Bill 2026, seeks to promote fairness, ensure proper documentation of tenancy agreements, and curb unlawful evictions that often lead to disputes and insecurity in residential areas.

Hon. Theodor Bala Mayaki, representing the Quaan Pan South constituency, moved the motion for the second reading, highlighting the importance of the proposed law in addressing long-standing tenancy issues across the state.

Hon. Adamu Aliyu, representing the Jos North North constituency, strongly endorsed the bill, describing it as a significant step toward protecting the rights of both landlords and tenants.

Following extensive debate, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon.

Naanlong Daniel, directed the clerk to read the bill a second time, and it was subsequently passed without opposition, referring it to the relevant committee for further legislative scrutiny and public input.
