Plateau Assembly Proposes Bill for Women's Inheritance Rights

On April 14, during a public hearing at the Plateau State House of Assembly, stakeholders gathered to discuss a proposed bill aimed at protecting the inheritance rights of women and girls in the state. The meeting included participation from government representatives, judicial bodies, security agencies, female advocacy groups, traditional institutions, and civil society organizations, all supporting the initiative.

The bill seeks to regulate and protect women's rights to inherit property from deceased husbands and parents, countering traditional practices that favor male children. Hon.

Kalamu Idri Gyang, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary Matters, and Hon. Sylvest Wallangko, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, both expressed strong support for the bill, highlighting its potential to transform societal norms and address long-standing gender discrimination.

Esther Simi Dusu, Special Adviser on Social Welfare to the Governor, described the bill as a pathway to empower women, aligning with national policies on women's property ownership. The proposed law is expected to mark a significant turning point in addressing gender inequities in inheritance practices in Plateau State.
