Plateau Schools to Reopen September 14 After Diphtheria

The Plateau State Government has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state to resume academic activities on Monday, September 14, 2026, marking the beginning of the 2026/27 academic session. This decision follows a temporary closure that began on September 7, 2026, due to reported cases of suspected diphtheria infection.

Joyce Ramnap, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, stated that the closure was a preventive measure to allow health authorities to assess the situation and enhance surveillance and response mechanisms. The government assured parents, guardians, and school administrators that appropriate health measures would be in place to combat the disease and minimize transmission risks.

School authorities are expected to maintain hygienic environments and remain vigilant for symptoms of diphtheria. The government also urged parents and guardians to uphold personal hygiene and take prompt action if symptoms arise.
