Plateau State Faces Renewed Violence Amid Security Concerns

Plateau State is currently facing a significant increase in violence, with recent incidents including the murder of 13 individuals and multiple abductions during a ceremony in Kagarko Local Government Area. President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences and pledged to deploy a network of artificial intelligence-enabled cameras to aid law enforcement in combating the violence. This resurgence follows a pattern of violence that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands over the past two decades. Former Governor Jonah Jang highlighted the destruction of 160 communities and criticized past administrations for failing to address the root causes of the violence, which he attributes to farmer-herder conflicts and land access issues. Current Governor Simon Lalong acknowledged the ongoing problems and the need for a more robust approach to security. The violence has become a recurring issue, with calls for action from various leaders falling short of tangible results.
