Plateau State Launches 500-Cattle Abattoir Project

Plateau State has officially launched the construction of an ultra-modern abattoir designed to process 500 cattle per day, located within the Heipang Special Agro-Processing Zone (SAPZ) in Barkin Ladi. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, who described the project as a significant step towards building a modern livestock economy.

The abattoir will replace traditional slaughter methods with a world-class system that meets international standards, aiming to enhance public health and create thousands of jobs. Governor Mutfwang outlined a comprehensive livestock value chain strategy that extends beyond meat production, highlighting opportunities in hide, skin, leather manufacturing, and dairy products.

The project is supported by the World Bank and aims to position Plateau State as a major agro-industrial hub. Minister of Livestock Development Idi Mukhtar Maiha praised the initiative as foundational for a new livestock economy in Nigeria, which will help mitigate disease risks and improve food safety.
