Plateau State Launches Dual Abattoir Push to Modernize Livestock Sector

Plateau State and federal authorities have begun construction on modern meat processing facilities aimed at transforming the state into Nigeria's livestock hub.
Plateau State has initiated construction of a modern abattoir facility at Heipang Special Agro-Processing Zone with a processing capacity of 500 cattle daily, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang announced at the project's groundbreaking ceremony. The facility represents a shift away from traditional livestock handling toward industrialized meat production, with officials projecting the creation of thousands of jobs across the value chain.
The federal government separately unveiled a comprehensive strategy to position Plateau State as Nigeria's premier livestock production and processing hub. The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development outlined plans encompassing ranch development, feedlot operations, dairy production, and the rehabilitation of grazing reserves. Minister Idi Mukhtar Maiha highlighted Plateau State's historical significance in livestock innovation and veterinary excellence during a June 15th stakeholder meeting in Jos.
A second abattoir project under federal oversight has also commenced construction in Jos, with identical daily processing capacity of 500 bulls. Officials emphasized that the facility will strengthen food safety standards, modernize Nigeria's red meat value chain, and position domestic producers for greater participation in international meat markets.
Sources contain a minor discrepancy regarding project locations: one reference indicates the Heipang facility, while federal ministry reports specify Jos as the site. Both initiatives prioritize employment generation and economic diversification in a state that has historically served as a livestock production center. The combined federal and state investment reflects a coordinated effort to address Nigeria's meat production demands through infrastructure modernization rather than expansion of traditional pastoral systems.
