Police Dismiss Shooting Claims at NURTW HQ in Abuja

On March 23, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command responded to a distress call at approximately 7:00 AM regarding a violent incident at the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters in Garki II, Abuja. Reports indicated that around 300 individuals armed with cutlasses, bottles, and bows attempted to enforce a court order without the presence of court sheriff officials, leading to a physical confrontation.

The police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Isyaku Sharu, intervened to restore order. During the altercation, several individuals sustained severe machete wounds, and others suffered varying degrees of injury, necessitating medical treatment.

The police have labeled circulating videos claiming their involvement in a shooting as false and misleading. Ibikunle Baruwa, the reinstated national president of NURTW, along with six others, was arrested and subsequently charged in a magistrate court in Wuse Zone 2.
