Police Deny Shooting NURTW Members During Abuja Clash

On March 23, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command responded to a distress call at approximately 7:00 AM regarding a violent clash involving around 300 armed individuals at the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headquarters in Garki II, Abuja. The police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Isyaku Sharu, arrived to find that the group was attempting to enforce a court order without the presence of court sheriff officials, which led to physical confrontations.

Members of the NURTW resisted this action, resulting in severe injuries, including machete wounds to victims. The police have refuted claims circulating on social media that their personnel shot NURTW members, labeling these allegations as false and misleading.

Seven suspects, including Ibikunle T. Baruwa, were arrested and charged at the Magistrate Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2 following the incident.
