Police Deny IGP's Alleged 'Shoot-on-Sight' Directive

The Nigeria Police Force has officially dismissed reports alleging that Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu directed officers to shoot individuals found with illegal firearms. This clarification was made by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, who stated that the claims circulating on social media misrepresented the IGP's remarks during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State.

The police emphasized that the IGP did not authorize any "shoot-on-sight" policy and urged the public to disregard such reports. During the meeting, Disu reminded officers that only legally authorized personnel may carry firearms and addressed the issue of illegal weapons used in serious crimes.

He reiterated that the use of firearms is governed by Force Order 237, which outlines lawful use during official duties. The police force remains committed to protecting citizens' rights and urged the public and media to verify information before dissemination to avoid creating unnecessary fear and mistrust in security institutions.
