Lagos Police Deny Tear Gas Use on Pensioners Protest

On August 31, 2026, approximately 500 members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Lagos State Council, held a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, demanding outstanding pension adjustments and wage awards. The protest was led by Comrade Michael Omishade and Comrade Agnes Funmi Sesse.

Following the protest, the Lagos State Police Command issued a statement denying reports of tear gas being used against the pensioners, labeling the allegations as “false and misleading.” Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi stated that not a single canister of tear gas was fired during the protest. The command emphasized its role in maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of both the protesters and the public.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) called for the arrest and prosecution of the officers involved, while the pensioners are expected to meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu later in the week to discuss their demands.
