Three Sisters Drown in Tiga Dam Canoe Accident

On Saturday, August 29, 2026, three sisters from the Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community, identified as Murjanatu, Atikatu, and Bilkisu, tragically lost their lives when the canoe they were traveling in capsized at Tiga Dam. The incident occurred around 2 pm, and the victims drowned before help could arrive.

Hajiya Sa'adatu Salisu-Soja, the Chairperson of Tudun Wada Local Government Area and Chairman of the Association of Local Government Chairpersons in Kano State, confirmed the unfortunate event, describing it as a devastating loss for both the family and the community. She extended condolences and prayers for the deceased and their loved ones.

However, Saminu Abdullahi, spokesperson for the Kano State Fire Service, stated that they had not received any emergency calls regarding the canoe accident, raising concerns about the coordination of emergency responses in the area. Tiga Dam is one of the largest dams in Kano State, serving irrigation and domestic water supply purposes.
