Police Inspector Mercy Bassey Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver

Mercy Bassey, a female police inspector attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station, was killed by a hit-and-run driver on September 29, 2026, while performing route-lining duties for President Bola Tinubu's return from a working vacation in the United Kingdom and France. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM at the Adekunle Intersection on the Third Mainland Bridge, where Bassey was struck by a black Toyota Highlander SUV as she crossed the bridge towards Lagos Island.

The driver did not stop after the collision. Bassey was rushed to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta but died while awaiting treatment.

Her remains are set to be transferred to a morgue in Yaba for preservation. As of the time of reporting, the vehicle's registration number and the driver's identity were unknown.

Investigators are working to obtain CCTV footage from the area to assist in tracking down the vehicle. Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident but did not provide further details.
