Edo Police Arrest 87 Kidnappers, Rescue 30 Victims

The Edo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Mondai Agbonika, announced the arrest of 87 suspected kidnappers and the rescue of 30 victims on January 5, 2024. This operation was part of an intensified intelligence-led campaign against violent crime across the state.

Agbonika disclosed these details during a press briefing in Benin, highlighting that the arrests were part of a sustained offensive targeting criminal hideouts in Edo North and Edo Central. The operation utilized newly deployed helicopters and drones for aerial surveillance, enhancing the efficiency of ground raids.

In addition to the kidnappers, the command apprehended 13 suspects for murder, 14 for armed robbery, and 15 for cult-related activities. The police recovered six stolen vehicles, three motorcycles, 39 mobile phones, and various firearms, including AK-47 rifles and pistols.

Agbonika commended Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for approving the helicopter deployment and acknowledged the logistical support from Governor Mondai Okpebholo.
