Police Investigate 19-Year-Old's Death in Imo Crash

The Imo State Police Command has initiated an investigation into the death of 19-year-old Chibuike Friday, who was killed by a speeding car during an unauthorized street racing event in Owerri, Imo State. The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the front gate of Imo State University on Okigwe Road.

Another victim, Bright Ukwuoma, sustained injuries in the crash. Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye confirmed that the driver, 30-year-old Michael Chibuike Dike from Umuolowu, Ejemekuru in Oguta Local Government Area, has been arrested and will be prosecuted following the investigation.

Preliminary findings indicate that Dike was driving a Lexus ES350 at excessive speed when he struck Friday, who was crossing the road. The impact caused Dike to lose control, resulting in Ukwuoma being hit as well.

Both victims were taken to the hospital, where Friday was pronounced dead, and his body has been deposited in the morgue. Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso condemned the incident and directed a thorough investigation while expressing condolences to the deceased's family.
