Police Officers Arrested with Firearms in Cross River

On May 5, 2026, two police officers from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command were intercepted during a joint stop and search operation in the Ugep Idomi community of Cross River State. The operation involved personnel from the Nigerian Army and the police.

Preliminary findings indicated that the officers were found in possession of firearms and live ammunition, as seen in a viral video. Following their arrest, the officers were taken into custody and subsequently transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Calabar for further investigation.

Rashid Afegbua, the Commissioner of Police for Cross River State, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the motives and circumstances surrounding the officers' actions. The police command assured the public that any individual found culpable would face the law, regardless of their affiliation.
