Egbetokun Retires as Inspector General of Police

The Nigeria Police Force formally retired former Inspector General of Police, Egbetokun, during a ceremony held in Abuja, attended by senior police officers and family members, including his wife, Elizabeth Egbetokun. Egbetokun described his tenure as one of the greatest honors of his life, highlighting operational improvements and the establishment of a cybercrime section during his leadership.

He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in 2023, succeeding Usman Baba, who was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021. Egbetokun's tenure was marked by controversy, particularly regarding his extension beyond the statutory retirement age of 60, as stipulated in Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020.

Born on September 4, 1964, Egbetokun is expected to retire in September 2024 but had his tenure extended beyond the mandatory limit, attracting criticism from civil society organizations. He will resign in February 2026, with Tunji Disu appointed as the acting Inspector General of Police.
