Police Summon ASP Over Threats to Citizens Filming Officers

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has commenced disciplinary proceedings against an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) due to a viral video showing him threatening members of the public who were filming police activities. The police described the officer's conduct as unacceptable and unprofessional, stating that it contradicts ongoing reform efforts aimed at promoting accountability and professionalism among law enforcement.

The Inspector General of Police, Olaitan Rilwan Disu, reiterated that citizens have the lawful right to record police officers while they carry out their duties, and such recording should not obstruct operations or compromise safety. The officer involved has been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Police Command headquarters for immediate disciplinary action.

The NPF emphasized that it does not tolerate threats or intimidation from its officers, as such behavior undermines public trust in law enforcement institutions. The outcome of the disciplinary process will be communicated to the public in due course.
