Political Parties To Boycott Rivers LG Elections

The umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria, IPAC, has announced a collective boycott of the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State scheduled for August 30, 2025. In a strongly worded statement issued by IPAC's national chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, the council described the planned election as illegal, unconstitutional, and a mockery of Nigeria's democracy.

IPAC argued that the Sole Administrator of Rivers State lacks the constitutional authority to conduct a democratic election and called the proposed election a charade. The council also condemned the gathering of political hirelings parading as state party chairmen to endorse the election, stating that such endorsements lack legitimacy and reflect desperation.

IPAC has formally communicated its opposition to the election and warned that proceeding under the current circumstances would make a caricature of Nigeria's constitutional democracy. The council called on Nigerians, civil society groups, and stakeholders to rise in defense of the constitutional order and urged citizens to condemn the apparent hijacking of the political.
