Rivers APC Kicks Against August 30 LG Polls

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has opposed the scheduled local government elections on August 30. The APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, called on the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to postpone the polls until after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concludes the continuous voter registration exercise.

Nwauju accused RSIEC of selectively adopting a decision by the dissolved 6th commission, led by Justice Adolphus Enebeli. Despite growing resistance from civil society groups and politicians, RSIEC has maintained its stance on the election date.

RSIEC Commissioner in charge of Political Parties Affairs, Godfrey Woke, stated that the voter register obtained in March remains valid, and candidate screening for chairmanship and councillorship positions has already begun. The RSIEC Act authorizes the commission to organize the elections, according to the Sole Administrator, Hector Igbikiowubo.
