Post-Election Violence Escalates in Cameroon, Sparking Widespread Unrest

Fresh violence engulfs several cities in Cameroon within 24 hours of the Constitutional Council declaring a 93-year-old president as the winner of the disputed presidential election, leading to widespread unrest. Reports of arson, looting, and clashes have emerged in Douala, Mbouda, Bertoua, Batouri, and other areas.

The central police station in Bertoua was threatened, and protests with street occupations have intensified. Amid escalating tensions, teachers sent pupils home due to security fears.

Amnesty International has called on the Cameroonian government to respect and protect the rights of peaceful assembly and demanded a prompt independent investigation into deaths during the protests.
