Nigerian Press Organizations Advocate for Information Sovereignty Amid Digital Platform Dominance

Nigerian press organizations, including the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), are urging the government to protect the country's information sovereignty amidst the increasing influence of global digital platforms. They emphasize the importance of securing the Nigerian press in the digital space to enhance national security and social stability.

The NPO, alongside the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and other media bodies, warns about the challenges posed by foreign technology companies like Google, which can disrupt the traditional media landscape and threaten journalistic professionalism. The NPO President, Ladi Bala, stresses the detrimental impact of revenue loss on newsrooms due to the dominance of digital advertising platforms, leading to job losses and declining journalistic standards.

The call to action includes the need for fair compensation for Nigerian content and the strengthening of institutions like the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) to protect Nigeria's information sovereignty.
